A crane is a symbol of a long (and happy) life; traditionally, and I don't know why.
The rope is shimenawa, which is a kind of Shinto symbolism, but today's Japanese society is far from religious basically, and this sort of "wreath", I think, has lost the "religious" sense.
This is a cosy cafe (organic-minded) where I enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and a cream puff when I'm near. (It's closed for the new year holidays.)
All is quiet on New Year's Day. Nothing changes on New Year's Day ... well, except for this ubiquitous poster.
